Blade Runner 2049: A film that replicated the original and more!

Blade Runner 2047 follows on from the 1982 original, directed by Steven Spielberg. The films cast includes the han-some Harrison ford and Jazzy Ryan Gosling, along with others. The film is still in cinemas now if you decide to read this WITHOUT seeing it first. There will be spoilers, but if that’s what you makes you see the film, than my job is done.

The Plot

The plot (in short) followed a world in which human life was revolutionised. It was Blade Runners (played by Ryan Gosling) job to track down “replicants” (scientifically engineered humans) who had gone over their termination date. Older versions that had been replaced, by faster, stronger models that were no longer fit to serve in society.  There was a little deviation in the plot where Blade Runner to have his own adventure. It was emotional and insightful and without this, the plot would have been too “busy”.

We saw Blade Runner (Ryan Gosling) bloody and injured through out the film – mostly from being attacked by the older resistant models. He was pretty good in his role as Blade Runner – very fast and violent, yet oddly likeable and trusting. I would not normally put these together, but on this occasion it worked.

I especially liked the scene when Blade Runner met Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford). A stand off of wits and aim. And despite their differences, they still agreed to make up over an drink of Whisky. A great idea!

This version of the world was amazing though: humans were scientifically engineered, but they looked like any other humans. Houses were so kitted out that you could have a virtual wife hollogram where ever you went and memories seemed so real, despite not being your own. I do have some trouble imagining what this world would be like in 2049, I don’t see flying cars any time soon.

I would not describe it as an action movie per say. It was slow and very futuristic.  It was quiet in the monologue, then all of a sudden, it was fast and intense and exciting. This of course may not appeal to everyone. Like some people, I have a tendency to get bored during a slow film, unless something really catches my eye. Despite the mix of two completely different genres, I found that I before I could get bored, they was a scene of loud music or action and I was engaged again.

I understood it despite not seeing the Blade Runner recently. The way the plot was interesting to those who were familiar with the original AND basic enough for new fans. It is a very hard balance to get!

Star Rating

For me the movie was good. I enjoyed it and would see it again! I think it is worthy of 4 stars!
