S1 E3: Dramatic concrete finale to the gripping series, Paula! (Spoiler alert)

What a build up to such an exciting episode! I have been critical of the previous two episodes, however this finale passed all my expectations.

My Thoughts

The episode was less farfetched than last week’s and answered all our questions.

James found out his fate in court and Paula and Mac were understandably struggling with everything that had seen and gone through. Mac was still recovering from his attack when he confronted James after he attacked Paula in the restaurant.

I have called Paula marmite before and I could not agree more in the finale. She has an odd way of solving her problems and it mostly includes getting other people involved and in the wrong. She also doesn’t help herself and tends to go back to old flames such as James.

We saw a different side to Paula and I actually felt sorry for James, especially after he revealed his sad childhood and the identity of that young girl he had been seeing. The young girl being his sister, I admit that I expected her to be one of his victims so I guess there are no skeletons in his closet.

So poor James was suffering with more frequent nightmares and his sister Mary was appearing. She looked very creepy with her pale skin and she didn’t speak at all – she just stared and I was waiting for her to jump out. Luckily she didn”t…

Paula became a different person in the finale and we found out how psychotic she really was. James came to visit her in her basement and a kiss became something more sinister. James woke up in a dark container, which was later buried under fresh concrete. This just reminded him of when he was locked in a cupboard with his sister. James had finally met his match and relied on Paula to live – “I keep you alive or you can die and it won’t matter”. I thought she had killed and buried him, but this is so much worse.  I found this very disturbing to watch, and just to make it even more creepy, we saw Mary one last time.

Final Note

So the series was short and sweet, but not low on drama, suspense and little girl sightings. The ending was very unpredictable and uncomfortable and Paula’s final act made us awe in shock. Very good series. Would recommend.

Star Rating

Overall I would give this episode and the overall series 4 stars!

S1, E2: Troubled Paula faced more drama in an overly packed episode!

This is a review of Paula, episode 2, series 1. on BBC 2, normally shown on Thursday night.

My Feelings

I found this episode quite farfetched and filled with unnecessary drama – fights galore that added nothing to the story line, just a way to lengthen out the episode! I would prefer two episodes to three as it would be easier to watch.

Paula has that marmite feeling to her – you either love her or hate her, and in this episode, I found her very eerie. Yes she had lost Phillip and her brother in suppose suicides, however I found her hard to watch. Her constant frown and vulgar language was very off putting. I do not understand why James and the detective would suddenly be so fixed on her – were we suppose to be scared of her and not James?

We know that James is not mentally stable and has had increasing illusions of a young child. It was very creepy. but brings up the question: Does he have any skeletons in his closet?

To be honest, Paula isn’t any better. Death and stress do bad things to people and her mental capacity has got a little less predictable since her one night stand with James.

Her weird thoughts have also given us a bit of a chill – the fact that she liked being the prisoner in games when she was younger and explained how she visited another family while she was unconscious, after asking her brother to strangle her. It was all a bit disturbing really.

 Final Note

Dramatic? yes but a little too dramatic and predictable! You could just tell what was going to happen to her alcoholic brother. It was inevitable.

Star Rating

I would give it 3 stars as the plot was a bit too ambitious!

Ahh well. Let’s see if next week is better!

Late review of Paula S1 E1: Prepare to be glued to your seat and mesmerised by all the drama!

So I watched the first episode of Paula this week. I have not really had chance to publish my thoughts about it and I will try and keep these brief.

My Thoughts

We were introduced to Paula ( Denise Gough), a quiet chemistry teacher and then later met Handyman James (Tom Hughes). At first looks, he was professional and had charm and handled Paula’s rat problem with ease.  Paula was in pursuit from Philip, at PE teacher at the same school. He seemed eager to spend weekends with her behind his wife’s back.

It all seemed normal, but then things got weird and a one night stand became something more sinister and dark.

I saw James’s character change and we saw him in a more violent and stressful light. Not only that, he was acting rather odd and with visions and nightmares, he looked a little unstable. This seemed incredibly evident when he started to investigate into Paula’s life and finally learned about Phillip and their secret one time affair.

He became rather creepy, and it showed no bounds as he blackmailed Philip and lured him to a dark rubbish site, only to kill him with his bare hands.

I have seen many films which have resulted in a one night stand, and nothing this dramatic has come of it.

Final Note

It was unpredictable and tense. My opinions of these characters went up and down like yoyo – sometimes sympathy for James state and then awe at his audacity to deliver violence. The death of Philip made me shudder and the ghostly girl sighting in James van was chilling.

The director made it very clear in this episode that nothing was as it seems and some problems are skin deep. Paula’s comment of “You could be anyone” after their one night stand was now more relevant.

The Replacement S1 E2: Ellen’s pursuit in investigating Paula has attracted the wrong attention. Is Ellen wrong to interject or is she right about her after all?

The thriller continued in the second episode. Ellen was still pursuing Paula and decided to get more involved in finding out her intent. She started to get more and more suspicious and this was attracting the attention of her family and psychiatrist husband.

She was not intimidated or scared of Paula, but should she be?

The Plot

“So that’s it she jumped?” She wanted justice and wanted her to go down for the crime, yet she had no proof that Paula did it.

Ellen’s husband said that is was suicide and “wanted it to be all about us”. This was another thing to think about after giving birth to her newborn baby.

Paula turned up one day with flowers – trying to butter her up? She tried to be supportive and asked questions like “why did she call you?” as if she did not know what was going on. She also offered some motherly advice, which they did not appreciate.

Kay’s husband did not know why Kay jumped (or fell?) and confirmed that she was upset by an interference with someone, but who was it?  She suggested that someone else was on the roof and tried to plant the idea.

Paula read the remembrance at Kay’s funeral and it was emotional. They went back a long way. She broke down half way through and Paula came up to finish. She said a few words like she knew Kay well.

Ellen bonded with her daughter by investigating whether she was with her husband, Keiran that night. It was a bit of spy work. Ellen was at a sleepover that night apparently according to her husband. But what was all he said…

Ellen went back into work one day and it was all normal. No one stopped straight away to see her, expect her boss when he looked up from his paperwork. They did not want to put her under any pressure to be there  too early and told her to “sleep on it”.

Ellen found Paula’s daughter on Facebook and messaged her, obviously hoping to find something out that they were not telling her. They messaged each other, but what she did not know was that Paula was behind the messages. So where is her daughter? and does she have one?

Ellen asked to see Kay’s phone and slightly upset her husband. Ellen asked questions about a potential affair and then she leaves. Paula walked around the corner and stared at the car as she drove away. She knew that she was suspicious and could start playing dirty back. She found a number in her phone and a name of “Georgia” who worked for a architectural company. Kay contacted her about a project but they never followed her up on it. She wanted to carry it on…

She wanted to get to know Paula and that could then uncover more of her tendencies. She met Paula’s daughter who seemed normal. And not soon after, she bought her baby into work  everyone loved her and Paula held her for a bit too long. She seemed tense and said how she would love to start again – maybe it was jealousy? either way it was odd.

To her surprise, She was offered a promotion to replace Kay and it was a chance to start a fresh.

Ellen felt a bit left out and left the office, under the watchful eye of Paula. She left for the meeting and Paula found out where she was going. She recognised the workplace from her CV and Paula called and warned Georgia. Georgia then left and told Ellen to stop harassing her.

Ellen left her child in the car, and Paula took a photo of her unattended baby! As leverage or bribery or just for looking? Something was off…

Paula showed the photos to the police and lied about the timescales. She made it out that Ellen left her baby for 10 minutes…. He advised that she talked about the way she felt and did not mention ANY of her theories about Paula. She talked to the psychiatrists who then made a report and a support pack for her.

She visited Paula’s house to find that her daughter was at a sleepover… she was never around?  After a tense conversation and some sneaky eye movements from Paula, their husbands left and they both were left alone.

She confronted her about her intentions – she knew about the photos she took and told her that she had reasons to kill Kay. Paula never showed off her daughter and that’s not what a proud mother does. Where was her daughter?

The episode ended on a cliffhanger with Paula saying ” OK, you win”….

Final Thoughts

The episode was tense and hands on and showed us a more suspicious and creepy side to Paula.

After giving birth to her child, Ellen is still quite delicate and needs to ease herself back in slowly. Ellen is taking it in her stride and is sticking to her views and suspicions. This is a dangerous move as everyone else around her sees something else – a nice women with no bad intentions. Ellen is coming across as slightly crazy and unstable, which works in Paula’s favour.

I am worried that Paula now is in too deep and will be in the firing line. This will threaten her work, personal life and her relationships with people. The question is ….. is it all worth it??

We will find out in the last episode next week! Exciting!

Let me know what you think of the review and the episode!

Bye guys 🙂
