S1 E3: Dramatic concrete finale to the gripping series, Paula! (Spoiler alert)

What a build up to such an exciting episode! I have been critical of the previous two episodes, however this finale passed all my expectations.

My Thoughts

The episode was less farfetched than last week’s and answered all our questions.

James found out his fate in court and Paula and Mac were understandably struggling with everything that had seen and gone through. Mac was still recovering from his attack when he confronted James after he attacked Paula in the restaurant.

I have called Paula marmite before and I could not agree more in the finale. She has an odd way of solving her problems and it mostly includes getting other people involved and in the wrong. She also doesn’t help herself and tends to go back to old flames such as James.

We saw a different side to Paula and I actually felt sorry for James, especially after he revealed his sad childhood and the identity of that young girl he had been seeing. The young girl being his sister, I admit that I expected her to be one of his victims so I guess there are no skeletons in his closet.

So poor James was suffering with more frequent nightmares and his sister Mary was appearing. She looked very creepy with her pale skin and she didn’t speak at all – she just stared and I was waiting for her to jump out. Luckily she didn”t…

Paula became a different person in the finale and we found out how psychotic she really was. James came to visit her in her basement and a kiss became something more sinister. James woke up in a dark container, which was later buried under fresh concrete. This just reminded him of when he was locked in a cupboard with his sister. James had finally met his match and relied on Paula to live – “I keep you alive or you can die and it won’t matter”. I thought she had killed and buried him, but this is so much worse.  I found this very disturbing to watch, and just to make it even more creepy, we saw Mary one last time.

Final Note

So the series was short and sweet, but not low on drama, suspense and little girl sightings. The ending was very unpredictable and uncomfortable and Paula’s final act made us awe in shock. Very good series. Would recommend.

Star Rating

Overall I would give this episode and the overall series 4 stars!

The Other Side of Hope showed humanity but didn’t hold my interest! (Spoiler Alert)

When a film focuses on war, death and refugees, it really makes us hurt emotionally. Stories of war, depicted beautifully by Abi Kaurismaki, made me appreciate what I have – a home, family, food and security.

My Thoughts

The Other Side of Hope had a simple plot and followed a restaurant owner who helped a Syrian refugee who fled war and was desperately trying to find his sister.

Themes in the film included war, in which we learnt of horrible family losses. For Khaled, this consisted of his mother, father, brother and friends family.  We were introduced to Khaled who fled war for a better life and payed to be smuggled over borders. There were some moments where we saw true discrimination and violence against immigrants and I found this very uncomfortable. This was however bypassed by the humanity of local Finnish people who supported Khaled. I found the way Khaled was welcomed by the restaurant owner and the team very encouraging and I hope that those who watch this film understand refugees more and the risks they take to get to safety.

In contrast, I would say that the plot was slow and it took a while for me to get into it. I found myself getting bored and only really being captivated in the last 30 minutes. This film was not really meant to be fast paced though, rather was aimed to be close to the heart and teach us about morals. The film has definitely given me some food for thought!

Last Note

Overall I found the film very heart warming. The only thing I would say is that it was slow to develop and not as funny as I expected.

Star Rating

I would give this film 3 stars as it was not fully to my taste and quite slow in the plot.
