This is a new BBC series following two people and how they are facing life in its most unpredictable way.
General Plot
The episode followed Sean Bean as Father Micheal Kerrigan with an abusive and sad past and Anna Friel, a financially struggling mother of three who lost her job. The reality is that life is not always kind like God and for Father Micheal, he has seen horrible things.
My Thoughts
We saw struggles with claiming benefits, feeding three children, dealing with the past. It seemed that they were all trying to make a living with the little money and resources they had.
I was especially emotional when Anna’s mum died and had the phone in her hand to call help, only to die before it came. She was so broke that she tried to hide her mothers death so she could still get her pension and it became days. Her family were asking questions and the idea of keeping her mother alive for her pension, was to others quite heartless, nethernerless, it was what Anna relied on to live.
Father Micheal’s flashbacks were all church related and not positive. He was still troubled with memories.
Was it intense, gripping? Yes. It was a different type of drama and was more relatable than gripping murder series.
Final Note
I found it very difficult to watch, not because it was badly made… no, because people actually lived that way with little money and lack of job security. It was heart breaking.
It was different to everything I have seen and it’s real life depiction reminded me of a film I had watched – I Daniel Blake. One I would also recommend to watch if you have a night to yourself and a box of tissues.
Star Rating
I would give this series 4 stars and would recommend watching this (if you have not already). The series looks like it will become more interesting. I will definitely be watching next week. You in?
